Original sketch
September 2018
The figure is loosely based on a marionette created by Kurt Cobain. I took the nature of and the idea of Kurt's altered marionette and altered my own in a way that the figure is unmistakably a part of me, and at the same time holds a piece of Kurt in it.  Kurt Cobain, drawn on the right, has, and continues to be very important in inspiring me and helping me understand myself as well as myself in relation to others around me.
Kurt was, and is, a voice for the voiceless and, whether he knew it and/or wanted to believe it or not, helped cultivate and change the punk rock culture and movement, and even the way  we all are today as individuals and as a society. In interviews and through his music videos, lyrics, and in everything he did, Kurt Cobain constantly and consistently called out the homophobia and mistreatment of and misogyny towards women in the media as well as the punk rock scene. From calling out Axl Rose's homophobic comments, to writing songs as blatant as "Rape Me", an anti-rape song shining light on the stigmas surrounding rape. Kurt Cobain was a feminist and a beautiful artist and human who's words and actions continue to influence us all today.

“Return of the Rat”--
Lino print on news and tissue paper, charcoal May 2019
This artwork was created using collage and relief printing. I used tissue paper and news print to create texture and contrast. I then printed the rats that i carved on top of the collage. I used graphite and charcoal in the background to create emphasis and movement. Currently, this piece does not have any deep personal meaning to me, however it does make me feel deeply happy and safe.

“Heart Shaped Box"--
Pen, Marker, and Charcoal
To create this artwork I drew the heart in pen and then outlined the shape in marker, using a pattern to create rhythm. On the opposite page, I scribbled using charcoal. the reds and pinks with the heart placed next to the white page with charcoal marks provides contrast. When I close this sketchbook on this page, I see it as closing the box which holds the heart on the right. The sketchbook like a box of thoughts and feelings and wonder, like fireflies caught in a jar.

Ballpoint pen on watercolor
April 2019
To create this artwork I painted the background and the objects in the foreground with watercolor. I then outlined the figures and any pools of color I saw in the background with black ballpoint pen. Finally, I glued ripped up pieces of gum wrapper around the Koi Fish.
This artwork is a representation of how water is important in many aspects of life and connects us all.

Ballpoint pen and marker
April 2019
To make this artwork I used Micron pens to draw the heart. I used ballpoint pen and marker to create the rhythm of the background. I glued the heart on top of the page rather than just drawing the heart directly on the paper to create a sense of depth and emphasis.
