"Self-image"
Copic markers, acrylic paint, sewing thread
September 2017
I made this piece to represent how I see myself, how I feel my actions and beliefs would translate into human form. I used the thread to illustrate the forced suppression of my thoughts and of who I am, forced by doctors and medications to diminish me for the benefit of those around me. I made the decision to make the background black to evoke the feeling of seclusion from the outside world and to promote the idea that this true version of myself exists only inside my head and can never be brought to the surface.

"Choke"
Clay and glaze
May 2018
this piece is based off the album art for a song called Choke by the band I Don't Know How But They Found Me. The song details the writer's resentment towards Hollywood, the mentality, the people. How the LA mindset and environment can be a difficult culture to understand and/or join if not entirely desired to do so. The song, a manifestation of the writer's anxieties about not fitting in and not wanting to.

"Unlikely Lovers"
Digital art software, paper cutouts, acrylic paints, Copic markers
February 2017
This piece is a representation of the lovers' life together. Filled with music and shared with their family. I used sheet music to convey the presence of music within this family and how it drives the plot in the story that this piece is based on. Around the lovers are cutouts of all the other characters from a poster for the play. The two men in the foreground are saying goodbye to one another for the final time, surrounded by their friends and family. As the story is set in New York City during the AIDS crisis, I included a cityscape in the background to reflect the setting.
For this piece I started by drawing the two men digitally. I then drew the cityscape freehand to give the appearance of unsteadiness in the buildings, as opposed to using a ruler to get straight lines, to give the viewer the impression of imperfection within the couple and the family. I colored the windows with different colors corresponding with the colors designated for each character depicted in the poster for the play. Next, I glued down the sheet music and the two men that I had drawn digitally and printed out. I painted the top portion of the background black to contrast the brighter colors throughout. I then glued the cutouts of all the characters around the men to show a contrast between how happy they were in the beginning and how that was taken away from them in the end leaving an entire family broken. I finished the piece by writing the quote that inspired this art, "lovers come and lovers go, lovers live and die fortissimo", and sealing the entire thing with shiny mod podge to make the piece brighter.

"The truth is out there"
Charcoals and watercolors May 2018 This piece was inspired by both the X-files and the current politics in our country. The alien on the left represents innocent citizens, the alien skull on the right represents the slaughtering of these innocent citizens that our government is willfully ignorant to. The cherry blossoms, given to the United States as a gift from Japan and planted in Washington D.C., represent the government's lies, cover-ups and empty apologies. |

"Fight-or-Flight"
Acrylic paint, oil pastels, ebony pencil
October 2017
The origamis in my piece reflect light and dark, good and evil, life and death. The crane is a symbol of hope and healing. The dove, a symbol of peace. The stars, representing the calmness of the night sky. These are at the top because the sky is associated with light. At the bottom, symbolizing darkness, a crow and a boat. The crow represents the intermediary between life and death. The boat symbolizes mortality and the inescapable realization that at any moment we could sink.
